Sample selection criteria answer (fictional, labelled as a sample)

This is what one answer in the pack looks like. The applicant, job and clinic are made up; the shape is exactly what you get for each criterion: a plain opening, the situation, what you did, what happened, and a closing line that points back at the job.

Criterion 2: Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities and deliver under pressure

As roster coordinator at a nine-doctor general practice for three years, I owned a schedule that two receptionists updated every day. In early 2025 a run of double-bookings started drawing patient complaints at the same time as we were onboarding a new doctor and changing practice software. I treated the double-bookings as the priority because they were costing patients and the practice money, and I asked the practice manager to move the software go-live by two weeks so I could fix the cause first. I set up one shared calendar with a colour for each doctor, wrote a one-page booking rule, and ran a ten-minute check at the start of every day for the first month. Booking complaints fell from about four a week to fewer than one, the new doctor started with a full list, and the software change went ahead on the new date without any lost appointments. My manager described it as the practice’s smoothest year. In this role I would bring the same habit: name the thing that is costing the most, fix its cause, and keep a short daily check in place until the fix holds.

The 9-point STAR checklist we use on every answer

1. The first sentence says what your role was and where, in plain words. 2. The situation is one or two sentences, with a number if you have one. 3. “I”, not “we”: the panel is scoring you. 4. The action is the longest part and names what you actually did, step by step. 5. The result is measured (a number, a date, a decision) or, if there is none, what changed and who said so. 6. One example per criterion unless the ad asks for more. 7. The last line points back at the job you are applying for. 8. Within the word limit, usually 250-350 words per criterion, or the ad’s own limit. 9. Nothing in it that is not true; a gap is a question for you, never a guess.
